Career Development Curriculum and Activities

In addition to requiring a quality K – 12 academic program for their children, parents also look to their school district to provide a well-planned and smooth transition from high school into the next phase of their children’s lives.

The Dallastown District has integrated this preparation process into the K – 12 academic program in the form of the K – 12 Career Development Program Curriculum and Activities.

In this segment of the District’s web page is an overview of the objectives for career development at each grade level and the instruction / activities provided.

Parents may assist their children throughout their school years by utilizing the bridges.com software and internet services licensed to the Dallastown District. This information is included in the Career Pathway / Career Planning “One Piece of the Puzzle” attachment. 

Students entering 9 th grade will be utilizing the Career Pathways Planner to select one of 5 broad Career Pathways. As students progress through high school, they will be focusing their knowledge about their personal attributes toward the selection of appropriate career goals.

It is this gradual and progressive exposure to the planning of a student's future that will ultimately lead to an informed and conscientious transition into an appropriate “next step” upon high school graduation.

Please Note: In the process of providing the numerous Career Development programs and activities throughout the district, hundreds of community volunteers in numerous career fields are needed. If you are willing to serve as a classroom speaker; workplace host for internships, shadowing or field trip site; career representative; employer; or in any other way, please contact Jud Stauffer at the High School. 

Workbased Education

As students achieve self-knowledge (their interests, aptitudes, personality, strengths and weaknesses), they begin to relate this to career possibilities. In order to do this, they research career fields – first in broad career pathways, and then in more specific job titles. By the time they are juniors and seniors, students are encouraged to do more than read career related information. Programs at the high school are designed to give students real-life exposure to individuals in the workplace or hands-on work experience which will help to determine if their career interest is, indeed, an appropriate one for them. In the process, students also begin to understand the employability skills necessary to be successful in the workplace.
